Core Files

WordPress Core Files are the essential files that power up the system. They consist of PHP and related source files that contain code which adds the functionalities to WordPress. Core files shape the WordPress admin interface, and they give you the ability to work with WordPress, install plugins & themes, and so on.

While there are instances where you'd need to change some files like wp-config.php, for example, it is not advisable to alter core files in any way unless you know what you're doing.

Altering those files my render your site unusable. More often than not, a modified core file represents a malware that you've picked up.

By scanning core files, WP Reset's Emergency Recovery Script will let you know if there are any unknown files in the core folder and it will also compare all known core files to their master copy on wp.org and let you know if any file has been modified in any way. After that, you can either take manual actions on the file if you know what it is, or you can quickly reinstall core files and get to the basics.

Scan Core Files

  1. Navigate to Support -> Emergency Recovery Script
  2. Open the Emergency Recovery Script, and use the password provided by the plugin to access it
  3. Find "Core Files" card
  4. Click on the "Scan Core Files" button

Wait for a few seconds for the system to scan all the core files and show you a quick status.

If there are any unknown files to be found, WP Reset will list them in the Core Files card. Next to the name of the file, you will find a red "Delete file" button that will let you quickly remove that file from your WordPress folder.

Reinstall Core Files

If you decide to reinstall all the core files, simply click on the button & wait for WP Reset to download them from wp.org and unpack them. This action will not modify your database or other files in any way

  1. Navigate to Support -> Emergency Recovery Script
  2. Open the Emergency Recovery Script, and use the password provided by the plugin to access it
  3. Find the "Core Files" card
  4. Click on the "Reinstall Core Files" button
